Monitoring Moisture & Coat Weight in Converting Applications

MoistTech’s one-of-a-kind near-infrared technology is used to increase energy efficiency and lower cost.

MoistTech Corp. is a leading global manufacturer of Moisture Measurement & Coat weight Sensors and equipment, first established in 2003 by Director John Fordham alongside two other fellow engineers. The company have their head office based in Sarasota, FL, which covers North & South America, and other locations across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Having the precise moisture levels of paper products in converting operations, newsprint, tissue and corrugated liner pulp has become a critical component during production. Paper can easily become either too wet or too dry wasting manufacturers time or money. With the help of industry partners and 40 years of knowledge, MoistTech has developed the IR 3000 moisture sensor which is ideally suited to measure the moisture levels as well as water and solvent based coatings and coat weight coat weightes during the paper/converting process, improving manufactures product quality and increased productivity within substantial cost savings.

The biggest benefits MoistTech customers realize with its sensors are energy reduction and drying control. Quality and energy savings are a big focus for our customers; the energy savings is significant in the reduction of over-drying. Not only is it about quality, moisture is money and one additional percent of moisture can cost an enormous amount of money in a lot of manufacturing facilities.

In the paper / converting process there are many locations throughout manufacturing that the paper moisture sensor can be used. The location is often determined by the space availability and accessibility on the web / converting machinery as well as manufactures moisture control plan. Once installed, a manufacturer can continuously monitor the process and can control the moisture content, either manually or automatically.

Not only does it measure moisture (in % dry and % wet) by taking instant, non-contact readings, but the IR-3000 also takes accurate readings of temperature, chemical composition, and water-based coatings. It is ideally suited to measure glue and adhesive coat weight. The IR-3000 cuts production costs while boosting product quality. Both startup and down times are reduced, while product waste is drastically decreased. If your company relies on accurately measuring glue or adhesive coat weight to create quality products, the IR-3000 is the right moisture testing instrument for you. For the best performing glue and adhesives coat weight moisture analyzer, look no further than the MoistTech IR-3000.

The IR3000 sensor offers unparalleled performance, with a strong reliable service that delivers stability, maintainability and controllability, producing the perfect solution for moisture maintenance. Its unique features make the IR3000 adaptable to a variety of material variations such as colour, height of material, and size, allowing the sensor to produce accurate readings regardless of material distinctions. Not only that, but it can also be used within the most extreme locations. With an easy application and maintenance free service, the IR3000 delivers reliable assistance for any moisture measurement requirements.

Non-Contact measurements are extremely important with converting applications and most competing methods are in contact with the product, which causes the sensors to wear out and, in some cases, renders the product unusable. MoistTech’s technology allows for a non-contact reading, providing instantaneous readings on the manufacturing line. Each sensor is customized to the customer’s precise application prior to being shipped so it’s essentially a plug and go systems when it arrives to the customer. It has the capability to store up to 50 product codes if you are measuring more than one product on the line as well, making its ease of use very convenient.

MoistTech is very experienced with the requirements in the paper/converting process. Our sensor calibrations, measurement wavelengths, algorithms and sensor optical requirements are pre-set at the factory. Typical moisture accuracy is about ±0.05%, coating accuracy varies from 0.1 to 0.01 micron depending on coating type. Typical analog range is 0-10% moisture and up to as much as 40%, subject to application. The outputs can be adjusted to optimize PLC or recording requirements.
